AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR EYELID SURGERY?
Any one or combination of the following conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery:
- Excess skin obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids
- Loose skin hanging down from the upper eyelids, perhaps impairing vision
- A puffy appearance to the upper eyelids, making the eyes look tired
- Excess skin and fine, crepey wrinkles of the lower eyelids
- Bags and dark circles under the eyes, often with a depression along the bony border of the lower eyelids
- Droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris (colored portion of the eye)
HOW BLEPHAROPLASTY IS PERFORMED?
- UPPER BLEPHAROPLASTY: When upper blepharoplasty is performed an incision is placed along the crease or fold of the upper eyelid and finely sutured. Excess skin or fat is removed from this incision. As the incision is made in the crease of the eyelid, it is barely visible and easily camouflaged with makeup. Upper blepharoplasty is performed under local anesthetic and sometimes with sedation as a day surgery patient. This procedure is not painful and takes approximately 45 minutes. By doing a simple procedure like this, we can expect to reverse the age by around 7-9 years.
- LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY: Lower blepharoplasty can be performed with an incision inside the eyelid or externally, just beneath the eyelashes. If suturing is required, dissolving sutures are used. Excess fatty tissue is removed from the lower eyelid giving the patient a less tired look and reducing puffiness. It is often common to have a laser performed on the lower eyelid to decrease lines around and underneath the eyes. A Lower Blepharoplasty takes approximately 60 minutes and both procedures combined usually take up to 90 minutes. It is a daycare procedure and done under local anesthesia and it will reverse the age by 7-9 years.
RISKS, COMPLICATIONS & SIDE EFFECTS
- Complications from eyelid surgery are uncommon; however, it is important to be informed of possible side effects before you proceed with surgery. Dr. Viral Desai will explain them to you in detail. They are as follows:
Bruising which subsides after a two-week period - Eye irritation which can be improved by eye drops
- Haematoma which is a collection of blood under the skin which requires removal
- Infection requiring medication
Risks and complications can be avoided and it is recommended that you follow the pre and postoperative steps as advised by Dr. Viral Desai.
What You Should Expect During Consultaion
Dr. Viral Desai will place a mirror to your face and ask you to tell him of the changes you would like to see from surgery. He will tell you whether or not your expectations are realistic and achievable. Dr. Viral Desai will consider several points when evaluating you for surgery, such as your allergies (if any), do you wear contact lenses or glasses, are you are seeing an eye specialist for any eye conditions and is there any excess skin on the upper eyelids or lower eyelids.
We give utmost importance to patient confidentiality and take strictest care to ensure your privacy. The staff at CPLSS understands that it can be difficult for a patient to make enquiries about such a delicate matter. It is our aim to make you feel as relaxed, comfortable and fully informed about the procedure as possible.
Preparation For Surgery
- STOP SMOKING & INTAKE OF CERTAIN MEDICATIONS: You should stop smoking (including the use of nicotine patches), intake any blood thinning tablets (i.e. aspirin/disprin), and intake vitamins at least one week prior to surgery.
- PRESCRIBED MEDICINES: Medicines prescribed by Dr. Viral Desai should be taken as advised.
- LOOSE COMFORTABLE CLOTHING FOR SURGERY: Your admission time will approximately be 30-60 minutes prior to your surgery. You need to wear loose comfortable clothing – with a top that is either buttoned or zipped at the front – not one that is pulled over the head.
What You Should Expect After Your Surgery
- DAY AFTER SURGERY SWELLING & BRUISING: Swelling and bruising will occur the day after surgery causing you some discomfort. This can take up to 1 week to subside.
- SLEEPING POSITION & COLD PACKS: Sleeping with your head elevated or using two pillows will help to minimize swelling. Applying cold packs to the eyes for 24 hours after surgery will help to reduce the swelling. It is important to note that every patient is different and some patients suffer more swelling or bruising than others.
- EYES WILL FEEL TIGHT FOR A TIME: Your eyes will feel tight for a time, but this is quite a normal reaction. Do not exercise, smoke or drink alcohol during the recovery period as this can slow the healing process. Do not expect too much too soon from yourself and remember that rest is an essential part of the healing process. It is very important to take the prescribed medicines.
- 3-5 DAYS OFF WORK: You will require 3-5days off work and you should discuss this with Dr.Viral Desai. He will inform you when strenuous exercise can be resumed or undertaken.
- SUTURES REMOVED AFTER 5 DAYS: Sutures will be removed after five days.Sutures will be removed after five days.
- NO CONTACT LENSES FOR 2 WEEKS: You will not be able to wear contact lenses for two weeks post-operatively and you will need to wear good UV protective sunglasses when exposed to sunlight.
